The obstacles

Prior to construction the client came to us with the following concerns and hurdles:

The initial concept designs the client received from another designer were not aligned with their vision and they weren’t happy.

Could ‘Granny’s’ flat be built on the same level as the main residence, close to the creek and garden, to accommodate easy access and maintaining privacy given the deviating ground levels?

Could the existing granite from the ground be repurposed?

The cost and burden of being bushfire compliant.

The unknown expense and cost of earthworks associated with moving clay soil and granite.

Building two homes within a tight budget.

The Vision

The client purchased a plot of land by a gently flowing winter creek, surrounded by an eclectic array of homes within the undulate remedial landscape of Darlington.

The client brief described the importance of designing a solar passive home that:

- Nestled within the landscape

- Was unobtrusive and sensitive to its surroundings

- Serviced a family of 5 with an elderly parent

Ancillary to the main residence was “Granny’s” flat as we came to call it.  This additional dwelling had to meet certain access requirements including being on the same level as the main dwelling, close to a shared laundry and vegie garden while preserving a balance of privacy between both residences.

Alice's story

From the age of 10, Alice was fascinated by architecture. Despite her immigrant parents being concerned architecture was a male dominated industry, and even suggesting she become a lawyer or politician, her mind was made. Having grandparents that participated in the Warsaw Uprising in Nazi occupied Poland and surviving not one but three concentration camps, hard-work and tenacity is in her blood, and she wasn’t going to let a matter of gender stop her from pursuing her dream.

Alice studied architecture in Perth and Milan, graduating with a Bachelor of Environmental Design followed by a Master of Architecture with Honours at the University of Western Australia. Her educational experience gave her a foundational appreciation for beautiful and enduring design.

In 2015, Alice decided to trade the bustle of Perth for tranquil country living.  The magnetic allure of wide-open spaces, clean fresh air, green pastures and salty blue seas was too great to resist. This move enhanced her intuitive understanding of the psychology of spaces, materials, light and colours, and the powerful effect those elements have on mental health. This intuition illuminates her approach to design.

When Alice is not designing awe-inspiring buildings, she’s going on adventures in nature with her sons or travelling widely to expand her rich knowledge of international cultures and how it influences architecture (this includes, riding down Death Road in Bolivia). Her not-so-secret superpower is that she can memorise your entire house in just one visit. Like every superhero, Alice wants to make the world a better place and she does that through her passion for shaping the built environment to establish a strong sense of identity and purposefulness in the community.

The bulk of the home is lightweight, steel framed and clad in Hardies to reduce costs and allow for other quality features, where it really matters such as:

- High ceilings to the main living zone

- Commercial window and door frames with double glazing

- Feature stone walls

- Interior jarrah wall lining

The combination of a polished concrete floor, jarrah timber cladding and stone feature wall creates a warm centre of the home; passively and emotionally.

To meet bushfire requirements, the residence is clad in a non-combustible material and black was chosen to compliment the colours of the natural landscape and rest inconspicuously.

How we delivered

Our starting point was to create a design that moulded with the surrounding natural environment as the client had desired.

To reduce excavation, we worked with the natural slope of the land. This involved raising the floor in “Granny’s” flat and the main bedroom wing above ground level.

We also moved Granny’s flat to the front of the residence, rather than the back where an ancillary residence would typically go.

For thermal mass, the main living zone serves as a central link between the flat and main residence with a concrete slab on the ground.

We repurposed granite from the site and used it in the feature stone wall which creates a dramatic backdrop for the entire living zone.

The result

The home rests perfectly comfortable as if it is part of the natural environment.

“Granny’s” Flat achieves all of the design brief’s goals and encourages harmonious living.

The main living zone has almost no reliance on artificial heating and cooling.

The home is a local talking point.

The client has received numerous compliments from neighbours and passer’s by have been taking lots of photos.
